Again, the YouTube of the Tennen Rishin Ryu inspired me that they wore shoulder pads for shinai sparring. In ancient time, the warriors used to wear a pair of 袖 to protect their shoulders and upperarms.

Modern martial artists wear shoulder protectors called 肩 in jukendo and yari sparring as shown in the image below.
